Project Title: Minimizing impacts of drought and COVID-19 on livestock herders and smallholder farmers by protecting agriculture livelihoods of vulnerable food-insecure households in Afghanistan

Project Location: Balkhab and Sozma Qala district

Project Duration: May 15, 2021 till October 14, 2021

Project Objective:

To provide season-critical support for vulnerable smallholder farming families by assisting wheat cultivation package.

Project Outputs: 1800 vulnerable smallholder farming households received emergency wheat cultivation package and technical trainings;

Project Beneficiaries:

• 1800 Vulnerable smallholder farming HHs (1000 HHs in Balkhab and 800 HHs in Sozma Qala district)

Project Assistance: Each beneficiary receives the following assistance:

• 50kg certified wheat seeds, 50kg DAP and 50kg Urea
• Technical training about Agri- farming techniques and Covid-19

Project Donor: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (UN-FAO)

Project Title: Anticipatory livelihood protection to minimise drought impacts and safeguard food security.

Project Location: Gosfanid, Sayyad and Sozma Qala district

Project Duration: May 15, 2021 till October 14, 2021

Project Objective:

The key objective of this project is to provide emergency livestock protection assistance and cash-based assistance for safeguarding food and nutrition security and ensure emergency agriculture livelihoods protection to mitigate the impacts of drought.

Project Outputs

• Output 1: Livelihoods and food security of vulnerable marginal herding, landless, women-headed, and persons with disability HHs protected through provision of emergency livestock protection package assistance.
• Output 2: Livelihoods and food security of vulnerable marginal landless, women-headed, and persons with disability HHs protected through provision of emergency cash-based assistance.
• Output 3: Awareness of all the beneficiaries mentioned above on key protection messages and on COVID-19 and important livestock diseases safety measures to adopt at livelihood practices, during market participation and in general appropriate preventive practices for minimizing transmission.

Project Beneficiaries:

• 2250 Vulnerable marginal herding HHs (750 HHs in Gosfandi, 750 HHs in Sayyad and 750 HHs in Sozma Qala district) livestock protection package
• 90 HHs (30 in Gosfanid, 30 in Sayyad and 30 in Sozma Qala district) for Unconditional Cash Transfer assistance (UST)
• 820 HHs (270 in Gosfanid, 280 in Sayyad and 270 in Sozma Qala district) for Cash for Work assitance

Project Assistance: Each beneficiary receives the following assistance:

• 200kg Animal feed (concentrate)
• 100 USD cash for work assistance: Each beneficiary receive 100 USD when they work for 20 days in the community. They developed irrigation infrastructures
• 100 USD Unconditional Cash transfer to women-headed/elderly headed and the household head with disabilities
• Deworming of livestock
• Technical training about livestock management, animal diseases and Covid-19

Project Title: Safeguarding food and nutrition security using anticipatory actions through cash transfer and emergency livestock protection inputs assistance to vulnerable food insecure households impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and anticipated impacts of La Niña induced drought in IPC-4 areas of Afghanistan

Project Location: Khwaja Sabz Posh, Pashton Kot and Qaisar district in Faryab

Project Duration: August 25, 2021 till January 31, 2022

Project Objective:

Safeguarding food, nutrition and livelihoods security of most vulnerable households adversely impacted by COVID-19 and La Niña in four IPC Phase-4 provinces of Afghanistan.

Project Outputs: 3000 vulnerable smallholder farming households received emergency wheat cultivation package and technical trainings.

Project Beneficiaries:

• 3000 Vulnerable smallholder farming HHs (1000 HHs in Khwaja Sabz Posh, 1000 in Pashton Kot and 1000 HHs in Qaisar district of faryab province)

Project Assistance: Each beneficiary receives the following assistance:

• 50kg certified wheat seeds, 50kg DAP and 50kg Urea
• Technical training about Agri- farming techniques and Covid-19

Project Title: Safeguarding emergency agriculture livelihoods and access to nutritious food of vulnerable food insecure farming families in Takhar province

Project Location: Chah Ab and Rostaq district, Takhar province

Project Duration: August 1, 2021 till February 28, 2022

Project Objective:

To provide season- critical support for vulnerable smallholder farming families by assisting wheat cultivation package and nutrition-sensitive vegetable cultivation /home-gardening package

Output 1: 2000 vulnerable smallholder farming households received emergency wheat cultivation package and technical trainings

Output 2: 2000 vulnerable landless/women-headed households received nutrition sensitive vegetable cultivation home-gardening package and technical training

Project Assistance:

• 50kg certified wheat seeds, 50kg DAP and 50kg Urea for each farmer
• Coriander 50gram, Cabage 50-gram, Egg plant 30-gram, Onion 50-gram, Okra 100-gram, Squash 100-gram, Tomato 30-gram and Red Radish 50-gram for each woman

Project Beneficiaries:

• 2100 Vulnerable smallholder farming HHs (300 HHs in Balkhab, 1300 HHs in Sancharak and 500 HHs in Sozma Qala district of Sar-e-Pul province)

Project Objective: The key objective of this project is to safeguarding food, nutrition and livelihoods security of most vulnerable households adversely impacted by COVID-19 and La Niña in four IPC Phase-4 provinces of Afghanistan

Project Outputs:

Output 1: Livelihoods and food security of 2000 vulnerable marginal herding, landless, women-headed, and persons with disability households protected through provision of emergency livestock protection package assistance and  distribution of unconditional cash transfer for covering food and basic non-food needs.

Output 2: Livelihoods and food security of 1832 vulnerable marginal herding, landless, women-headed, and persons with disability households protected through provision of emergency livestock protection package assistance..

Output 3: 900 vulnerable landless / women-headed households received nutrition sensitive vegetable cultivation home-gardening package and technical trainings.

Output 4: Awareness of all the beneficiaries mentioned above on key protection messages and on COVID-19 to adopt at livelihood practices, during market participation and in general appropriate preventive practices for minimizing transmission.

Project Title: Safeguarding Food Security through Emergency Fertilizer and Wheat Production Assistance.

Project Location: Faryab province and Sar-e-Pul province

Project Duration: February 05, 2022 till May 05, 2022

Project Objective: The key objective of this project is to provide season-critical support for vulnerable smallholder farming families by assisting Spring wheat cultivation package.

Project Outputs:

Output 1: 5650 vulnerable smallholder farming households received emergency Spring wheat cultivation package and technical trainings.

Output 2: Awareness of all the beneficiaries mentioned above on key protection messages and on COVID-19 to adopt at livelihood practices, during market participation and in general appropriate preventive practices for minimizing transmission.

The OSRO/AFG/135/CHG project aims to safeguard the food and nutrition security of 8000 vulnerable, food-insecure farming and herding households and will contribute towards FAO’s Humanitarian Response target of 2023.
